When High Tech Meets Sustainability

When High Tech meets sustainability, ingenious solutions are born that once again see Manini Prefabbricati as a pioneer in the sector and on a European scale for the use of new materials in prefabrication such as GFRP (GFRP Bar – Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers).

What is GFRP and How Manini Prefabbricati Uses It

GFRP is a special glass fiber that can replace steel inside the passive reinforcements of prefabricated products, and our company will implement the first European application of this brand new technology, with the construction of a bridge in Sardinia, in the municipality of Gonnesa.

The Advantages of GFRP for the Environment, Safety, and Cost-Effectiveness

The advantages of adopting this new material/technology are numerous:

  • GFRP is not subject to alterations and oxidations, it is not corroded by humidity and salt, and therefore does not tend to swell and crack the structure from the inside. This allows for significant savings in maintenance time and costs of the work and an effective extension of the useful life of the structure, in safety.
  • GFRP can also be used in combination with concrete made using saltwater, thus without depriving the community of water potentially intended for human consumption. The climate disruptions to which we are and will be exposed in the coming years increasingly remind us of how precious the world’s water resources are.
  • GFRP has a lower specific weight than B450C steel normally used for internal reinforcements and therefore, for the same quantity of material, this special glass fiber has a lower impact in terms of CO2 emissions on transport.

Great endeavors require a cohesive team working towards a common goal.

Our Partnerships

We present the design and production partners who have collaborated with our research development for the achievement of this important success and its first concrete application at the European level.

  • Prof. Fausto Mistretta – University of Cagliari

  • Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering

  • Prof. Antonio Manni – University of MIAMI

  • Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering

  • Municipal Administration of Gonnesa (Carbonia-Iglesias)

  • Production Partner: Sireg Group, which has obtained, unique in Europe, the ETA (European Technical Assessment) Certification for its Glasspree bars.
