OCCIONI GROUP: THE ‘MEASURE’ OF THE FUTURE

Angeli di Rosora (Ancona).

Enrico Loccioni flips through albums full of memories: there’s his first work booklet, a copy of the first order, and aerial photos of how the Angeli di Rosora area looked before the industrial settlement.

There are photos of Enrico as a young man, a youth with intelligent eyes who, at that time, says he didn’t imagine that the future would hold the success he’s had and the goals he’s achieved: but a young man who, in such a methodical and precise way, archives every step of his journey from the beginning, cannot help but know deep down that those would be just the first stages of a brilliant career.

Now the albums and catalogs are numerous and perfectly organized, telling the story of a man, of a family, who through ‘doing business’ has created beauty.

Behind the actions of Enrico Loccioni and his wife Graziella, by his side since the beginning of this extraordinary adventure, there is a fascinating entrepreneurial philosophy, deeply shared ethics and values, which balance the pursuit of profit, fundamental for any business, with attention to people, the environment, and the surrounding community: ‘…for us, the most important thing has always been to create a business that lasts over time and that develops culture and job opportunities, that is a common good, for people, for the territory, for the future…’

The idea from the beginning – he tells us – was to create a reality in which to develop projects rather than products, surrounding himself with the best people. But what characteristics do the best have?

The best have eyes that can see things others don’t, they have curiosity and a desire to learn, they are the young people who collaborate in a company with an average age of 32 and they are the wise ones, experienced professionals who have made their careers and work on a project solely and exclusively for the pleasure of doing it.

It’s an extraordinary mix of knowledge and experiences: young people know how to gather information with freshness and the older ones help them use it; in group photos of young people at work, there’s always some gray hair in a discussion and dialogue that appears devoid of hierarchies.

The Loccioni company, unique in many aspects, also lacks an exclusive core business or a flagship product: the heart is the competence of ‘measurement’, of control, which is articulated and combined in multiple activities: from quality control of processes, products and industrial buildings to environmental monitoring, from automation solutions for healthcare to renewable sources and verification of auto components.

The choice of the best also applies to clients – ‘growing in quality rather than quantity, working with the best in the world…’ – this is the will of the entrepreneur who, not by chance, collaborates with companies of the caliber of Mercedes, BMW and Bosch Siemens.

The same judgment criteria and parameters are also used for the selection of suppliers, with whom Loccioni aspires, when possible, to achieve a mutual exchange of collaboration.
Manini Prefabbricati was selected as a supplier for the construction of prefabricated buildings – he tells us – primarily thanks to important references from universities with which it had carried out research projects and even from competitors. But Loccioni confesses that the final choice was determined above all by the company’s solidity and the awareness that only Manini would have been able to realize ‘his buildings of the future’ as he had dreamed and designed them.

Those buildings of the future that are part of that broader project, of that vision which is the Leaf Community, a true open-air laboratory where buildings are ‘connective’ ‘…designed to intelligently use the various available energy sources…not only energy but also information, data, knowledge, people, elements of nature…’, like the Esino River which has been reclaimed and which Loccioni has taken charge of, securing work and transforming it into an energy source.

To this ambitious plan, a journey towards a possible future, great national and international names have joined, such as Prof. Federico Maria Butera, former professor of environmental technical physics at the Politecnico di Milano, Giorgio Di Tullio, designer and anthropologist, and Thomas Herzog, dean of the University of Munich and winner of numerous awards for sustainable architecture, who together take care of these ‘two wonderful kilometers of future’.

Enrico Loccioni, who loves to remember his farming origins and who grew up with entrepreneurial models like Enrico Mattei and Aristide Merloni, then embraced the ‘revolutionary’ thinking of Camillo Olivetti, understanding how an entrepreneurial dream can transform a community, improving the quality of life of those who are part of it.

At the end of our meeting, Enrico Loccioni carefully put away his Albums of documents and memories, aware that there will still be room for many more stories, faces, and projects to preserve.
